The patrol functions include many duties to
serve and protect but the two primary functions
in this classification include calls for service
and community commitment. While calls for
service and community commitment go hand in
hand, the department excels in its community
commitment through the dedication and
professionalism shown by all of its officers.
The patrol functions of the department include,
but are not limited to, the following services.
Calls for Service
Responding to 911 calls generated through Barrow
County Central Communications and through the
support services division of the police
department. These types of calls include
emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
Community Relations Development
Department members interacting with citizens of
the community to develop a better understanding
of their needs. This development of community
relations is accomplished through the
introduction of educational materials, special
programs, and personal contact with officers and
administrators of the department.
Crime Prevention Patrols
These ongoing tasks are accomplished through the
direct visibility of concentrated patrol units
in and around the subdivisions and businesses
located throughout the city. This high
visibility patrol technique has helped to ensure
that criminal activity remains at a low level
for the citizens and the community.
Initial Investigation of Crimes
and Arrest of Offenders
When responding to calls for service, officers
are routinely the first to arrive on the scene.
Once arriving on the scene the officer takes the
primary responsibility to investigate what
prompted the call for service, and to make the
determination if a criminal act has been
committed, and if an arrest is warranted.
During the initial investigation of a call for
service, if the officer determines that there is
insufficient information available to solve a
case, the case is then forwarded to the Criminal
Investigation Division. It is through this
cooperative effort that cases are solved.
Reporting of Criminal Activity
This is the last action taken by the Patrol
Division officer. Once a call for service has
been solved or before a call for service can be
forwarded to C.I.D., the officer must complete a
report of the criminal activity. These reports
can also include reports of non-criminal
activity.
